Mr. Bleaney line by line explanation

1 stanza:

In the first stanza, we find that the landlady is showing the room of his previous tenant, Mr. Bleaney, to his new tenant. The quotation marks in the first stanza show that this is a statement. This is a statement by the landlady. She says when Mr. Bleaney was spending his bodily life, he stayed in this room all the time like a dead person and did not do any kind of work. The statement of the landlady indicates that maybe Mr. Bleaney is an unhappy, sad, or pessimistic person. Or maybe he has no family. Because family provides positivity, strength, happiness, and responsibility. But Mr. Bleaney lacked all these qualities. It means he has no family.

Actually, this room is symbolic of life. Mr. Bleaney came into this room, stayed, and then left this room. This is symbolic of the arrival and departure of life.

2 stanza:

In the second stanza, the persona enters the room. He tries to observe the taste of Mr. Bleaney by examining the condition of his room. The condition of Mr. Bleaney’s room is very pathetic, bad, and dusty. The curtains in this room are very thin. The window is also in very dusty condition. There is a little grass on the window sill.

The condition of Mr. Bleaney’s room reflects the character of Mr. Bleaney. Maybe he is not a rich man. Or maybe he is not a neat and clean man. Or maybe he has no ambition to live a prosperous life.

This statement of the landlady reveals the job of Mr. Bleaney, which is very mean. He used to look after the small garden of his landlady.

Maybe he was not able to pay the rent for this room.

3 stanza:

There is a bed, an upright chair, and a sixty-watt bulb in Mr. Bleaney’s room. And there is no hook behind the door of his room. This ill-lighted room shows that he is a sad person. There is also no place for books or bags in his room. Books are symbolic of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding. But there is no place for books in his room. This shows that he has no literary taste. And he does not want to improve himself.

In the third stanza, there is a statement by the persona (the new tenant). He says, "I’ll take it." His statement shows that he wants to take this room as a challenge. He wants to change the condition of this room. But in the very next line, we find that the condition of this room has not changed. After taking this room, he is using the same things that Mr. Bleaney has used. The word "lay" is symbolic of doing nothing. He is using the same saucer that was used by Mr. B;eaney. The same tragedy is occurring with the persona. He is not aware that time is passing. He is using the same radio set that Mr. Bleaney has used. This radio set is not in good condition.

4 stanza:

To avoid the noise of the radio, he put cotton on his ears. He keeps on smoking and using the same noisy radio. He is passing his precious time thinking about Mr. Bleaney. He is not a relative of Mr. Bleaney. But he wants to know everything and anything about Mr. Bleaney. He keeps on thinking about the meaningless details of Mr. Bleaney’s life. He shows he knows the habits of Mr. Bleaney. He knows the time of his coming back to the house.

5 stanza:

The persona shows that he knows about all the activities and lifestyle of Mr. Bleaney. He spent his summer holidays at Frinton. To spend Christmas, he used to leave this room and go to his sister’s house in Stoke. His lucky number was four. The persona is only thinking about Mr. Bleaney. He has no idea that by doing this, he is only wasting his time. He should think about himself. Time does not stop for someone. Once it has passed, it does not come back.

6 stanza:

"Standing up" is symbolic for doing something. If he stand up, move and look around he come to know about the nature of movement. Nature gives us the message of movement, activity, struggle. Without struggle, nothing is possible. There is no elevator for success you have to take the stairs. If he stand up to look around he come to know that this was his home and he should make effort to bring a change in his life. He shivered with fear because of the thought that he wasted so much time. But this awareness is missing in both Mr. Bleaney and in persona. The desire to make a house is very natural desire. But Mr. Bleaney did not have this desire. If he was active he look around. But he was very passive.

7 stanza:

The final stanza is most important because the persona is coming towards a recognition that the distinction he wants to make between himself and Mr. Bleaney is illusory. This stanza seems to assert that Mr. Bleaney deserved no more than this "hired box" of a room because he was incapable of achieving anything in his life.
