Sentence and its Parts

Sentence is a group of words which must have complete meaning or sense.

Example:

·      He was reading a book.

Sentence contain a subject and a predicate. subject is what the sentence is about, the topic of sentence. And predicate is what is said about the sentence. 

Parts of sentence

1.Subject:

The subject tells whom or what the sentence is addressing.

Types of subject

Ø Simple subject

The single word that is the subject of a verb

Example of simple subject:

·      John is a thin boy.

Ø Complete subject

The complete subject is a combination of the simple subject, its adjectives, and modifiers.

Example:

·      Rahat’s poem about his mother made me cry.

 

Ø Compound subject

A compound subject is made up of two or more simple subjects connected by a coordinating conjunction and sharing the same predicate. Correlative conjunctions, such as both... and not only... but also, can be used to unite the pieces of a compound subject.

Example:

·      John and Jean joined the soccer team at the same time.

2.Predicate

‘’John walked down the street.’’ In this sentence, walked is the predicate because it is the verb that tells us what John is doing.

Types of predicate

Ø Simple predicate

The simple predicate is the main word  that tells something about the subject.

Example:

·      John ate his apple.

 

Ø Complete predicate

A complete predicate consists of both the verb of a sentence and the words around it.

Example:

·      The mouse slowly ran towards the food.

 

Ø Compound predicate

A compound predicate is a predicate with two or more verbs  connected by a conjunction. It says two or more things about the same singular or compound subject.

Example:

·      They both laughed and cried at the film.

3. Clause

A clause is a group of words, which may or may not have complete meanings or sense.

Types of clause

Ø Dependent clause

A dependent clause is a collection of words that includes a subject and a verb but does not communicate a complete notion. A sentence cannot contain a dependent clause. 

Example:

·      When I entered. (What happened when he entered The thought is incomplete.)

 

Ø Independent clause

A complete notion is expressed by an independent clause, which is a set of words that includes a subject and verb. A sentence is an individual clause.

Example:

·      When I entered, he was reading a book.

 

4. Phrase

Phrase is a group of words, which acts as one function of a sentence.

Example:

He eats food.

5.Modifier
