Noun and its types

A noun is the name of object, people, animals, event, state, feeling and idea. A noun functions as a subject or object of a verb. 


Types of Noun

        Proper noun

        Common

        Collective 

Common noun

A common noun is the name that is common to every  animal, person, place or things of the same category.

Example

·       Table  

·       School  

·       Chair  

 

Proper noun

A proper noun is the name of particular thing, particular person or particular place. 

It starts with a capital letter.

Examples

 

        Shakespeare

        Quaide-e-Azam

        Holy Quran

        Allama Iqbal

        Pakistan

Collective noun

        As far as collective noun is concern it represents a collection of individuals 

Examples of Collective Noun

 

Class :     A collection of students.

Team :    A collection of players.

Crowd :  A collection of people

Glaxy :    A collection of stars.

Army :   A collection of soldiers.

 

Material noun

Material noun represents a material or a substance from which things are made. They are usually uncountable nouns.

Example

·       Milk  

·       Water

·       Gold

·       Wood

 

Countable noun

                   Anything that can be counted, whether singular or plural is called countable noun.

       Countable noun take an article a, an, the .

         Example :                

 

·       Boy

·       Girl

·       Table

·       Chair

·       Class

 

Uncountable noun

                       Anything that can not be  counted is an uncountable noun.

 Example

·       Milk

·       Water

·       Rain

·       Wood

 

Abstract noun

              Abstract noun is a noun that is not physical.

Abstract nouns are the name of things that we cannot perceive through five senses (sight, hearing, smell, touch, taste).

An abstract noun refers to concept, state, qualities, event feeling,  etc. 

Example of abstract noun

 

        When a man dove into a lap pool to rescue a drooping child, his courage surprised the people. 

        “courage” is an abstract noun. You can see other nouns  “man”, “swimming pool “ and  “people”. You can’t see the quality “bravery”.

        It has no flavor, size, shape, or color. 

     

Example of abstract noun

 

        Feelings :    fear,  pleasure, anxiety,  stress,  sympathy

        States :        being, misery, freedom, chaos,  luxury

        Emotions :  anger, joy,  grief,  hate, sorrow,  love

        Concepts :  charity,  deceit, comfort,  democracy

        Events :       birthday,  childhood,  marriage,  death,  adventure, holiday

        Qualities :   beauty,  courage,  determination,  honesty,  trust.  

 

Abstract noun are formed in the following way:

 

        From Adjectives:          

        kind + ness = kindness           honest + ty = honesty

        From verbs:                                       

        grow + th  = growth

        From common noun:                       

        child + hood = childhood          friend + ship = friendship

Concrete noun

A concrete noun represents something that can be tasted, heard, seen, smelt or touched. In other words, a concrete noun is a noun that can be recognized through one of the five senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell or taste).

Compound noun

 

A compound noun consists of two or more words. Normally, they are divided into two sections. The first section describes the type of object or person it is, or who it is ( police, boy, water, dining, bed ).


The thing or person in question is identified in the second section (table, man, room, friend, tank,).

 

There are several ways to write the two parts.
